Divorce

PMJF divorce lawyers work together as a team offering exceptional experience, commitment, and creativity to handle even the most difficult divorces whether involving substantial wealth or complex custody disputes.

Although our divorce lawyers strive to provide basic legal information on our website, it is not intended as legal advice or an adequate substitute for legal advice from an experienced divorce lawyer who is aware of the specific facts and circumstances in your case.   It is possible to represent yourself in some cases but it is not recommended in most.  Before deciding to do so, please consult with a local divorce lawyer of your choice to ensure self-representation is the right decision for you.

Divorce in Virginia is governed by statute.  See Virginia Code Title 20, Chapter 6, which can be found here. However, there is an enormous amount of case law interpreting those statutes.  Please be advised that the case law is extremely important when evaluating any legal issues and only a divorce lawyer is qualified to interpret the law for you in light of your particular set of facts and circumstances. The most common issues in a Virginia divorce suit include:

  • Equitable Distribution of Marital Property
  • Spousal support or alimony
  • Child custody and visitation
  • Child support
